Credit Card Overview

Discover it® Cash Back is one of the many credit card offerings from Discover. This card stands out from the rest of its Discover family as it offers 5% cash back on a rotating bonus category for up to $1,500 in purchases (per quarter). Every quarter, the bonus category changes so you will need to keep a close watch on this credit card.

Below are some previous examples of the bonus categories offered by Discover:

  • Q3 2022: Restaurants and PayPal
  • Q4 2022: Amazon and digital wallets
  • Q1 2023: Grocery Stores, Drug Stores and Select Streaming Services
  • Q2 2023: Restaurants and Wholesale Clubs

Pros

  • $0 annual fee
  • No Foreign Transaction Fees
  • 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in purchases per quarter (within rotating bonus category)
  • Cash Back Match: Discover will match 100% of your cash back earned at the end of your first year
  • 25 unique credit card design options to choose from
  • 0% intro APR for 15 months on balance transfers and purchases (then variable APR from ~17% – 28% based on your creditworthiness)

Cons

While this credit card has its perks, make sure to review these cons before applying.

  • Discover is not accepted abroad as widely as Visa or Mastercard
  • Must activate rotating bonus category every quarter to qualify
  • 5% cash back capped at $1,500 per quarter
  • Low 1% cash back on non-bonus category purchases

Recap

Above all, the 5% cash back on rotating bonus categories coupled with the cashback match from Discover, makes this card attractive. However, if you’re someone who prefers to not keep up with rotating categories, you may want to look elsewhere.
